We create them by practicing traditional wine making techniques using only the finest French oak barriques. Every bottle is individually numbered and stamped with the number of barriques in the final blend. Sandalford’s new Swan Valley wine range pays homage to an older, gentler time – and the actual origins of the Swan Valley.
1840, the new range created to showcase some of the magnificent old vines at the Caversham estate, is so named for the year Sandalford’s founder, John Septimus Roe, established the multi-awarded winery.
Our Wilyabrup vineyard is one of the largest and oldest in Margaret River and produces all the fruit for our Estate Reserve range. We spare no expense to ensure each wine is a benchmark in its own right and is created using only the very best new French Oak barrels. These quality standards are worth the effort, as indicated by the numerous awards the Estate Reserve range receives.
The Cellar Reserve range is crafted from carefully selected vineyards chosen by our winemaker. This Chardonnay is from a single site grown in the cool climate region of Pemberton, Western Australia.

Sandalford Wines have a long and proud history of making fortified wines from the old vines of the Swan Valley located just north east of the state’s capital, Perth. The warm, maritime climate and fertile volcanic soils lend themselves to the making of premium fortified styles. Producing Sandalera, the flagship of these fortifieds draws upon traditional European techniques. The base for this wine is the Sherry variety grape, Pedro Ximinez. After ripening to super sugar levels on the vine the fruit is hand harvested, fortified and cellared for up to 25 years. Careful blending then yields this engaging, luscious wine with one of the most distinguished trophy medal counts made in the history of Western Australian winemaking.
Since the early 1990s Sandalford Wines returned to family ownership with Peter and Debra Prendiville at the helm. Their significant changes to the winery over the past ten years reflect modern practices yet maintain the tradition and mystique behind the winemaking process. For example, while we use the latest equipment for processing fruit during vintage, Sandalford maintains small batch processing of all fruit and uses only top quality French and American Oak barrels.
Today the winery oversees two prestigious vineyards, one in the famed Wilyabrup region of Margaret River and the other in the Swan Valley.
Sandalford Wines produces six ranges of wine. Our Winemakers Range, whilst entry level and excellent value for money, is made from premium grape blends from our vineyards. The Margaret River Range caters for the mid tier price bracket, and designed to be easy drinking in style. The Cellar Reserve range is crafted from carefully selected vineyards (such as Pemberton) chosen by our winemaker. The 1840 Range pays homage to the origins of the Swan Valley and our vines at Caversham estate, and is name for the year Sandalford was established. Our Wilyabrup vineyard is one of the oldest and largest in Margaret River and produces fruit for our Estate Reserve and ultra premium Prendiville Reserve collections which both are positioned at the top of the Sandalford portfolio pyramid. All wines are made by the same exacting standards and attention to detail.
